What yoga class do you want?
Finding a yoga class used to be simple.
What yoga class is for you? Your choices were few because, well, there weren't that many people looking to try a yoga class and not many people to teach a yoga class. In 2001, about 1 million Australians were hitting the yoga mat; just over a decade later, that number has more than quadrupled and every second person has got a yoga teacher qualification. Some of yoga's popularity has to do with its (well-deserved) reputation for being an excellent stress reliever. But a big part of yoga's popularity surge is that doing a yoga class is really good exercise. Some people have found it tricky to make a living from teaching yoga classes alone and afford life’s continuing expenses. So many yoga teachers and yoga schools in order to survive have begun their own teacher training and had to become brilliant at marketing.
There are now many small and large places to go and train as a yoga teacher and learn how to teach an excellent yoga class. Some short courses and some full time, many are getting government accreditation to become recognised and monitored.
So what do you do if you want to earn a living as a yoga teacher? Well you need to be good at marketing or have lots of money to pay someone else to do it. Or as many people do, supplement your income with another job!
Your best yoga class market is personal clients and word of mouth. But I have found after 20 years in this business, it can be fickle and many people seem to be interested in chopping and changing, trying new things, new schools, new studios, and are very attracted to flashy marketing etc.
Sometimes I feel that yoga has lost its origins and core truth with all the hype.
My suggestion is to stick to your passion and keep teaching your yoga classes with truth and integrity, don’t get caught up in the flash marketing and groovy equipment, teach people to know yoga wherever they are.
Find a class that's right for you and find a way to teach a yoga class that is right for you.
